🏛️ POLITICS - LOCAL

🗳️ Leeds City Council annual meeting Wednesday - Labour minority administration expected to be confirmed - Political control of the city council is set to be formally settled this Wednesday (20 May) when all 99 of Leeds' councillors meet at the Civic Hall for the authority's annual meeting - the first since Labour lost its overall majority in the May 7 local elections. Labour - led by Kippax and Methley councillor James Lewis - currently holds 47 seats, down from 56 before the elections, and is expected to form a minority administration. The arrangement applies when no single party holds more than 50 per cent of the seats. The Conservatives are now the second largest group with 14 councillors, followed by the Greens with 11 and Reform UK with 10.

Labour's numbers dipped further after Jess Lennox — the Crossgates and Whinmoor councillor and former executive member for housing — left to sit as an independent shortly after polling day. Under a minority administration, Labour may need to seek cross-party consensus on major decisions voted on at full council. Liberal Democrat group leader Stewart Golton, re-elected in Rothwell, said: "It means there's an opportunity for the Labour administration to say, 'We get it. We get the message'. People want to feel listened to. We'll be looking forward to that new politics, going forward." (Sources: South Leeds Life · Yorkshire Evening Post)

Men were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs across a number of Leeds addresses, in a case connected to wider intelligence about organised drug supply in the city. Full details of this specific operation were behind a paywall, but it follows the pattern of recent West Yorkshire Police activity — including the major May 8 warrants at Stafford Street in Hunslet, Chelsea Grove in Wortley and Tempest Road in Beeston, which yielded seven arrests for theft conspiracy and Class A supply, plus the discovery of a significant cannabis farm next door. ✈️ HISTORY & HERITAGE

🛩️ One of only 12 airworthy WWII Hurricanes in the world soars over Leeds - Hurricane PZ865 - the very last Hawker Hurricane ever built, of 14,533 produced - performed a flypast over the Leeds area, captured in a remarkable photograph by local photographer John Holdsworth. The aircraft performed the flypast as part of the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway's 1940s weekend. According to the Royal Air Force, only 12 Hawker Hurricanes remain airworthy worldwide, with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) operating two of them. The Hurricane holds a special place in British aviation history — during the Battle of Britain it destroyed more enemy aircraft than all other air and ground defences combined, accounting for around 55 per cent of all Luftwaffe losses, yet has long been overshadowed in the public imagination by the Spitfire. PZ865 rolled off the production line at Langley in July 1944 and is operated today by the BBMF. (Source: Yorkshire Evening Post)

🚃 Leeds 399 - a century-old city tram - back in passenger service at the National Tramway Museum - Leeds 399, built in 1925 in Leeds City Transport's own workshops, has been confirmed as running in regular passenger service in 2026 at the National Tramway Museum in Crich, Derbyshire. The tram was the last in the city to carry the historic brown, yellow and white livery before blue and white took over. It left Leeds service in June 1951, later serving as a depot shunter at Kirkstall Works until 1957. It was acquired for preservation by the Leeds Tramways Historical Society and arrived at Crich on 15 August 1959 — just the second tram ever on site, and shortly before the Leeds tramway system itself closed. Despite arriving in 1959, extensive restoration meant it did not enter passenger service at Crich until 1991. It has now been in Derbyshire for over 66 years. (Source: British Trams Online)
