THE LEEDS BRIEF ⏰ Thursday, May 7, 2026

Your daily digest of what's happening in Leeds.

Good morning Leeds - and what a morning it is. It is Election Day. Across the city, polling stations opened at 7am and stay open until 10pm. Whether you're heading in before work, on your lunch break or after your tea - today is the day to have your say on who runs this city for the next year. We've got a packed edition today: a landmark anniversary for Leeds Pride, an important and disturbing update on a Middleton nursery worker who abused his position, and a Chapeltown cultural institution celebrating four decades of putting Leeds on the global dance map. Let's go. 👇

💡
🌤️ Weather: A mostly cloudy Thursday with a high of 15°C and a 20% chance of light showers - a decent day to vote. Marathon Sunday looks excellent: 13°C, only 15% rain chance. (Source: Met Office)

🗳️ ELECTION DAY - POLLS OPEN 7 AM - 10 PM

Photo ID required. 36 seats across 33 wards. Results Friday 8 May at the John Charles Centre for Sport. - Find your polling station at wheredoivote.co.uk. Any photo ID accepted — expired ID is fine if you're still recognisable. Full candidates list by ward at leeds.gov.uk/elections. What happens after the count? The key scenarios

Labour is projected to remain the largest group on Leeds City Council but may fall below the 50 seats needed for overall control of the 99-seat chamber. Here's what each outcome means in practice.

If Labour holds 50+ seats, business continues under the current leader, James Lewis. If no party reaches a majority - which analysts at PollCheck and the Yorkshire Post consider a credible outcome - negotiations would open between all groups ahead of the annual council meeting on 20 May, where the new leader and executive board will be confirmed. Even in the most optimistic Reform UK projections, the party can win a maximum of 38 seats - still 12 short of a majority and nowhere near enough to govern. A minority Labour administration or some form of cross-party arrangement are the most likely outcomes under no overall control. (Sources: Yorkshire Evening Post · PollCheck)

🌈 Leeds Pride turns 20 - La Voix, Sweet Female Attitude and Baga Chipz headline July celebration - Leeds Pride has revealed the lineup for its 20th anniversary event on 18–19 July - and organisers promise it will be the biggest and boldest in the festival's history. RuPaul's Drag Race UK and Strictly star La Voix and UK garage legends Sweet Female Attitude — best known for dancefloor classic Flowers — headline the two-day celebration in the city centre. Also on the bill are Tomara Thomas, Livin' Joy ft. Luzahnn and Baga Chipz. The festival will be presented by Bradley Riches and Soraya Vivian, Mamma Bear and St Sordid Secret. Leeds Pride held its first event in 2006 and wet weather kept numbers slightly down in 2025; organisers are hoping to rebound to the 75,000 who attended in 2024. Saturday will introduce a new ticketed event called The Freedom Party — designed to help secure the festival's long-term financial future — alongside a new VIP area on Lower Briggate and fringe events including a fundraising ball. "What we have in Leeds is genuinely rare - a Pride celebration that takes place right in the heart of the city," organisers said. (Source: BBC)

In July, Leeds Pride will be celebrating two decades of the event in the city

🚨 CRIME & CHILD SAFETY

⚠️ Police reviewing complaints after Leeds nursery worker continued in childcare following arrest - West Yorkshire Police's Professional Standards Directorate is reviewing a number of complaints from parents about how the force handled its investigation into Kristian Parry — a Middleton-based nursery worker jailed in March 2026 after admitting possessing more than 5,000 indecent images and videos of children, some of the most severe category. Parry, 26, also admitted fraud after providing false references to obtain a nursery job, having previously been dismissed from another nursery for alcohol abuse. Most disturbingly, two months after his arrest, while out on bail, he obtained work at a second nursery eight miles away — and parents at both settings only found out about his crimes after reading a BBC News report. They were never directly informed by police. One parent said: "We couldn't feed into things. I'm not impressed — it was bare minimum, and they were well below that to begin with." A second parent said: "When he's got these indecent images on his computer, how can someone say 100% they're not of my children?" West Yorkshire Police said it recognised the ongoing distress to families and confirmed a new fraud investigation had since been opened following further information coming to light since sentencing. 💃 ARTS & CULTURE

🎭 Northern School of Contemporary Dance marks 40 years - and Leeds should be proud - The Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD) - based in a stunning Grade II listed former synagogue on Chapeltown Road since 1987 — is marking its 40th anniversary in 2026, with a £250,000 National Lottery grant funding a year-long programme of community events across Chapeltown, Harehills and the wider Leeds area. NSCD is the only institution in England outside London offering conservatoire-level professional dance training, educating around 300 full-time students annually. Its alumni include internationally-celebrated choreographer Akram Khan MBE, and the school's Riley Theatre brings world-class touring dance companies to Chapeltown - a cultural gift to one of the city's most diverse neighbourhoods. The anniversary programme will bring together residents, local dancers, faith groups, schools and NSCD students and staff to share in the school's creative journey, honouring the legacy of founder Nadine Senior MBE, who began teaching dance to pupils at Harehills Middle School over four decades ago. The Yorkshire Post has also highlighted NSCD's significant contribution to the wider Leeds economy — as a national and international attraction that brings students, artists and audiences into the city. 🎸 Rodney Crowell plays the Howard Assembly Room - his first time ever in Leeds - Country and Americana legend Rodney Crowell — 15 number one hits, two Grammy Awards, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame — played a sold-out show at the Howard Assembly Room on Wednesday night. One of just four UK dates on his Airline Highway Tour, it was his first time ever performing in Leeds, something he confessed to the crowd with disarming charm. Flanked by pianist Catherine Marx and Eamon McLoughlin — staff fiddle player at Nashville's Grand Ole Opry — Crowell played for nearly two hours, stretching the venue curfew to its limit. Highlights included the deeply moving Stuff That Works (co-written with the late Guy Clark) and a rousing closing cover of Townes Van Zandt's Pancho and Lefty that turned the room into one giant singalong. The standing ovation was long, loud and entirely deserved. (Source: God Is In The TV)

🔬 SCIENCE

🦟 University of Leeds and Bath scientists identify new blueprint for malaria drugs - Researchers from the University of Leeds have collaborated with the University of Bath on a significant advance in the global fight against malaria - a disease that causes 282 million cases and 610,000 deaths every year. The Leeds-Bath team identified and designed a new class of inhibitors targeting an enzyme in Plasmodium falciparum (the parasite behind the most severe form of malaria) that helps it break down human haemoglobin to fuel its own growth. The new inhibitors were shown to kill the parasite in laboratory conditions and significantly outperform existing compounds. Leeds co-authors Professors Richard Foster, Elwyn Isaac and Glenn McConkey all contributed. Professor Foster said: "By defining the structural rules for selectivity, we can now design inhibitors that are both more effective and safer." Published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry.
