ποΈ West Yorkshire Mayor announces Mayoral Development Zone for Leeds - up to 20,000 new homes, new public spaces, cultural destinations - West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin and Leeds City Council leader Cllr James Lewis today announced plans to create a Mayoral Development Zone (MDZ) covering a broad swathe of Leeds city centre. Subject to approval by West Yorkshire Combined Authority, the MDZ would become a powerful delivery vehicle to unlock up to 20,000 new homes, local jobs, major new public spaces, cultural destinations and commercial developments. The announcement comes during UKREiiF β the UK's Real Estate Investment and Infrastructure Forum β which this week brings thousands of property, planning and investment professionals to Leeds. The zone would include the South Bank area, one of Europe's largest regeneration opportunities, and work closely alongside the Elland Road masterplan to the south. π Leeds South Village: Β£16 million government grant unlocks nearly 2,000 homes on former industrial land near the South Bank - Plans to transform long-derelict land in Leeds into a thriving new mixed-use neighbourhood have taken a major step forward after Homes England announced a Β£16 million infrastructure grant to Caddick Group to deliver Leeds South Village. The site - part of Leeds' South Bank regeneration area - has outline planning permission for 1,925 homes, a proportion of which will be affordable, alongside commercial space and significant green areas. The funding will allow Caddick Group to begin vital infrastructure work, including roads, utilities and green space, unlocking the site for rapid onward development. β½ Elland Road: West Yorkshire Combined Authority formally joins the partnership - mass transit now the pivotal next step - One of the most significant urban regeneration opportunities in the country took another major step forward yesterday as West Yorkshire Combined Authority formally signed on to the Memorandum of Understanding alongside Leeds City Council and Leeds United's development partner, the global private investment company The Lowy Family Group. Together, the partners are committing to deliver a transformational new district around the 40-acre Elland Road site, including 2,500 new homes, workspace, retail, world-class sports facilities and new public spaces. Most significantly, all parties are now aligned behind delivering a mass transit system connecting Elland Road to the city centre and the wider region β a project described as fundamental to unlocking the area's full potential. β΅ Leeds Dock Water Taxis acquired by Department - free rides this week, Β£3.50 from June - One of Leeds' most recognisable waterside features has a new owner. Workplace destination brand Department β home to the Exchange tech accelerator programme at Leeds Dock β has acquired the Leeds Dock Water Taxis, which travel between Granary Wharf near Leeds station and Leeds Dock. Department is bringing the taxis under its own branding, strengthening its role as a key anchor in the dockside neighbourhood. To celebrate the acquisition and capitalise on UKREiiF week bringing thousands of visitors to the city, the water taxis will run free of charge from Monday 25 May. ποΈ Teenager on motorbike suffers life-threatening injuries in Beeston collision - West Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses after a teenage motorcyclist was critically injured in a collision in the early hours of Tuesday morning in Beeston. It was reported at 12.09am that a collision had occurred on Tempest Road at the junction with Woodview Road involving a grey Mercedes A200 and a black electric motorbike. The rider of the motorcycle, a 17-year-old boy, was taken to hospital where his injuries are described as life-threatening. Officers from the Roads Policing Unit are asking for witnesses or anyone with relevant dashcam footage to come forward.

π« Road safety improvements completed outside Bankside Primary School, Harehills - Connecting Leeds, Leeds City Council's transport delivery team, has completed a package of road safety improvements outside Bankside Primary School on Shepherds Lane, Harehills. Works were developed in direct response to concerns from residents and local representatives about children's safety. The improvements include a new one-way system on the narrow residential street, a humped zebra crossing at the school entrance, improved pedestrian signals at the junction with A58 Roundhay Road, and updated parking restrictions to create safer space at junctions while maintaining nearby parking. The newlyweds and 80 of their guests walked from the venue through Leeds city centre to Leeds station and caught a Northern Class 195 train to New Pudsey, before heading to their reception at The Old Woollen. π "He is our inspiration and our warrior" - parents pay tribute to brave Noah, 2, who spent his short life at Leeds Children's Hospital - The parents of two-year-old Noah Marshall, a Grimsby boy who was born on Christmas Day 2023 with hypoplastic left heart syndrome β a devastating heart condition where one side of the heart fails to develop β have paid tribute to their son following his death in March. Noah spent enormous amounts of his short life at Leeds Children's Hospital, where surgeons performed a nine-hour open heart surgery when he was just days old, giving him a chance at survival. A specialist team at the hospital β ward L51 β became family to his parents Jessica and Jason over the two years they fought for their son's life. π York woman raises Β£16,000 for MND at Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon - Karen Burdass from Haxby, York, has raised more than Β£16,000 for the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association after completing the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon on 10 May β inspired by her brother Kevin Clarkson, a former York nursery retailer who was diagnosed with MND last year and was forced to close his Monks Cross shop Paul Stride. Karen, who completed the marathon in under five hours accompanied by her nephew Eddy Clarkson, initially set herself a Β£4,000 target but raised it to Β£10,000 as donations flooded in β before exceeding that figure considerably. Half of all funds raised over Β£250 will go to York's local MND group; the other half to the national MND Association. Kevin and family members were at the stadium finish line to cheer the pair home.
