THE LEEDS BRIEF ⏰ Friday, May 15, 2026
Your daily digest of what's happening in Leeds.
Good morning Leeds - Friday 15 May. The government is in free fall and Leeds families are at the sharp end. A Health Secretary who personally committed to a maternity inquiry in this city has walked out. The airport that keeps half the region awake at night just won more space to do it. And the city's 130-year-old medical school is starting its next life. It's a full one. Let's go. 👇
🏛️ POLITICS - NATIONAL
💔 Wes Streeting resigns - Leeds maternity families fear their inquiry could be lost in the chaos - Health Secretary Wes Streeting resigned from Cabinet on Thursday, becoming the first senior Cabinet minister to formally break with Keir Starmer following Labour's catastrophic local election results. In his resignation letter Streeting cited the government's "drift," calling it "clear" that Starmer will not lead Labour into the next election. Josh Simons simultaneously resigned his Makerfield seat to allow Andy Burnham to return to Parliament. Angela Rayner was separately cleared by tax authorities of wrongdoing on the same day, clearing her path to potentially run for the leadership. James Murray has been appointed the new Health Secretary.
The Leeds impact is immediate and direct. Streeting was the minister who personally met bereaved Leeds families last October and committed to a formal public inquiry into preventable baby deaths at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust - where more than 56 babies died in circumstances that families say amounted to gross failure. They fear momentum could be lost and relationships rebuilt from scratch. Donna Ockenden chairs the inquiry and was not yet fully underway. (Sources: Yorkshire Evening Post · Yorkshire Post)
The Leeds Maternity Families Group responded within hours: "His decision to step down brings a lot of uncertainty... Families in Leeds and beyond now have concerns about how a new Secretary of State would fully grasp the severity of the issues that have been directly raised with Wes Streeting."

⚠️ Leeds Bradford Airport wins legal battle for 941 extra night flights - but GALBA fires back immediately with court challenge - Leeds City Council has issued Leeds Bradford Airport a Certificate of Lawful Existing Use or Development (CLEUD) confirming that the airport operated within night flight limits in 2023, 2024 and 2025 - and has also ruled that 941 additional aircraft movements per year at night by quieter aircraft are lawful. LBA said it was "pleased" with the "much-needed certainty" the ruling provides. But campaigners GALBA (Group for Action on Leeds Bradford Airport) called it a "mixed decision" — welcoming the rejection of the airport's bid for unlimited night flying, which they said the airport "failed" to win, but strongly contesting the extra 941 flights. GALBA has written formally to the council today, demanding reconsideration and is exploring a court challenge. In practice, Hodgkinson warned, LBA will attempt to fly all 941 additional movements during summer, causing a sharp rise in noise and pollution over local communities.
